In the sneak peek of the upcoming Ghostbusters sequel, titled Frozen Empire, Sony dropped a bomb of excitement on fans with a chilly twist. Directed by Gil Kenan and following up on Jason Reitman’s Afterlife, the film is slated for a theatrical release on March 29, 2024.

Returning favorites like Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Carrie C***, Logan Kim, and Celeste O’Connor reprise their roles, joined by new faces Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster, and Emily Alyn Lind.

The trailer unveils an eerie phenomenon known as the “death chill,” causing people to freeze in the middle of July in New York. Patton Oswalt, shedding light on the chilling mystery, remarks, “For the first time in New York history, people froze to death in the middle of July.” Paul Rudd’s response, “Like, literally scared to death?”

In a departure from the franchise’s norm, the sequel is the first without the involvement of Ivan Reitman, who directed the original Ghostbusters in 1984 and its sequel, and produced later films in the series. Reitman passed away in February 2022. Jason Blumenfeld and Reitman produce the film, with Gil Kenan and JoAnn Perritano serving as executive producers.

The Afterlife sequel, showcased at CinemaCon, teases familiar faces donning Ghostbusters uniforms and sharing quarters at the iconic firehouse in New York City. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson, original Ghostbusters stars, made a comeback in Afterlife. Earlier this year, Hudson hinted at their return, along with Annie Potts, their co-star from the initial film and 1989’s Ghostbusters II.

“It’s great to be back with Danny and Bill and Annie Potts and the new cast,” Hudson expressed in a YouTube interview. “It’s been 40 years—it just feels like family.”
